Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our classes, registration, and studio policies.

General Questions

How long Is a course?

Our sculpture courses follow a 5-week format (15 instructional hours). Hand-building workshops are offered in either an intensive 2-week (6-hour) format or an extended 5-week (15-hour) format, depending on the theme.

I don't have any sculpting experience. Can I still sign up?

Absolutely. All experience levels are welcome. These courses are also highly relevant for visual artists from other disciplines and for those working in digital 3D environments such as ZBrush, Mudbox, or Sculptris who want to strengthen their understanding of form and volume.

Do I need drawing skills?

Drawing skills are not required. Having basic drawing experience can be helpful, but it is not essential. Many students find that learning sculpture actually makes drawing easier afterward.

Are there any prerequisites?

No prerequisites are required for introductory courses. The knowledge and skills developed in each class can enrich your current practice and be applied to future studies in sculpture, design, or digital media.

For Advanced Modelling Courses (Levels 2, 3, and 4), students must either: Have successfully completed the previous level at the studio, or Submit a portfolio for review to ensure appropriate placement. This helps maintain a focused learning environment and ensures students are prepared for the technical and conceptual demands of the advanced levels.

Do I need to bring anything?

You may bring an apron to protect your clothes. Clay is provided, and tools are loaned for the duration of the course. You do not need to bring your own tools.

How many people are in each class?

Classes are limited to a maximum of 6–8 participants, allowing for close guidance, live demonstrations, and individualized feedback.

Due to the technical complexity of the process, Moldmaking workshops are limited to 4 participants to ensure focused instruction and proper supervision.

Where is the course given?

The course takes place at: 5333 Casgrain Avenue, Suite 804A Montreal, H2T 0A8 , In partnership with Atelier Spirale.
The studio is located approximately 5 minutes’ walk from Laurier metro station. Take the elevator to the 8th floor, turn left, and you will find the studio at the end of the corridor.

Workshop locations may occasionally change depending on the event. Please consult your confirmation email to ensure you arrive at the correct address.

What materials are used?

For sculpture:  Sial 95F high-quality air-dry sculpture clay (gray) or Plainsman
For hand-building: Clay may vary, but we generally use PSH Cone 6 clay

Is this a pottery course?

No. These courses focus on sculpture, form, and artistic thinking rather than traditional functional pottery production. While hand-building techniques commonly used in pottery are taught and used, the emphasis goes beyond utility. Each object is developed through sculptural thinking and grounded in a historical and cultural context.

Will my work be glazed?

Glazing depends on the workshop. Hand-built pieces may be glazed if firing is selected.

Can I take photos during class?

Yes, we encourage you to document your progress for personal reference.

However, please be mindful that some participants may prefer not to appear on social media.

We ask that you respect others’ privacy when taking or sharing photos.

Is this suitable for designers or architects?

Yes. Many designers, architects, and digital artists use these courses to develop spatial thinking and material sensitivity.

What language is the course taught in?

Courses are typically taught in English or French, depending on the majority of the group.

All course materials and documentation are provided in both languages.

Finished Work & Firing

Can I keep my sculpture?

It depends on the course.

Sculpture courses: Because air-dry clay and internal armatures are used, pieces cannot be fired. However, sculptures can be cast for an additional fee, or you may choose to take an advanced mold-making course to learn how to cast your own work.

Hand-building courses: Yes, you can keep your work, and firing is available for a small additional fee.
